Attorney General’s Office Investigating Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Paterson

PATERSON, N.J. – The Attorney General’s Office is conducting an investigation of a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred this morning at approximately 6:30 a.m. inside an apartment located in the 100 block of Hamilton Avenue in Paterson, N.J. One male civilian sustained fatal injuries.

The decedent has been identified as Malik Canty, 36, of New York, N.Y.

The shooting involved members of the U.S. Marshals Service NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force. The Task Force members were seeking to arrest Mr. Canty on a warrant out of New York City for criminally negligent homicide. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered near his body.
